Healthy Claim on Food Labels (10/11/16)

October 11, 2016

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is redefining the criteria for companies claiming products to be “healthy” on food labels. This action is being taken in order to help consumers make informed decisions when it comes to food choices that align with modern public health recommendations, as well as promote a higher industry standard for healthy food production. FDA’s vision for a healthy diet is one that is supported by both the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a document supporting healthy diet consumption, as well as stakeholders from academia and the food industry.

FDA hopes to provide consumers with the proper nutrition information to allow them to make accurate judgments and effective decisions for healthier diets. The agency also hopes that manufacturers will adopt these new standards and adjust their production efforts to develop healthier food.
