EPA registers 11 products to aid in reducing the spread of C. auris fungus

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pesticide Programs has announced the availability of 11 products that can be used to disinfect surfaces against the emerging fungus Candida auris (C. auris).

This emerging multidrug-resistant fungus can cause severe infections and spreads easily between hospitalized patients and nursing home residents.

Until now, no antimicrobial pesticides have been registered for specific use against C. auris.

EPA states that these 11 new products “provide hospitals and other healthcare facilities with the tools and information needed to help combat this emerging global health threat and help decrease patient infections.”

In addition to the 11 new EPA-registered products, disinfectants with an EPA claim for C. difficile (List K) have been used effectively against C. auris.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have worked collaboratively to ensure product effectiveness against C. auris.
